Babyloniërs gebruikten spijkerschrift om Babylonische cijfers te noteren. Babylonische getallen werden door de Babyloniërs in een zestigtallig stelsel geschreven, net zoals de Sumeriërs. Het systeem van de Babylonische cijfers verscheen voor het eerst 2000 voor Christus. Om de Babylonische getallen te noteren worden 2 symbolen gebruikt: ‘ ‘om de eenheden aan te geven en ‘‘ om de tientallen aan te duiden.
Babylonische cijfers
Hieronder kan je de lijst van Babylonische cijfers terugvinden en de tientallen. Bij de Babylonische getallen bestond het getal 0 niet, hiervoor is pas later in de 3de eeuw een symbool gekomen (zie de tabel hieronder).

Babylonische getallen
Op basis van de Babylonische cijfers kan je ook eenvoudig getallen maken. Dat doe je door een combinatie te maken van de tientallen en eenheden, waarbij je eerst het symbool van de tientallen plaatst en dan het symbool voor de eenheden. Dit kan je doen voor alle getallen tot en met 59.

Babylonische getallen groter dan 60
Voor Babylonische getallen groter dan 60 is het een ander verhaal aangezien de Babyloniërs een zestigtallig getallenstelsel gebruikten. Belangrijk om weten dat dit ook een positiestelsel is, de positie van elk Babylonisch getal is dus belangrijk. Bij Babylonische getallen groter dan 60 wordt er een spatie gebruikt om deze getallen aan te duiden. Om bijvoorbeeld 61 te noteren, doe je dat op volgende manier: (let op de spatie ertussen). Dit Babylonische getal reken je om als 1 x 60 + 1 = 61.
Een voorbeeld van hoe je echt grote getallen kan voorstellen via Babylonische cijfers:
= (43 x 60²) + (22 X 60) +39 = 155359
Babylonische wiskunde
Om Babylonische te rekenen kan je de Babylonische getallen simpel bij elkaar tellen of aftrekken.
